About Steel Window Restoration

Original Steel Windows Are Worth Saving

Mid-century homes were built with steel casement and awning windows that are durable and good-looking when properly restored. Their biggest enemy is rust, and rust is fixable if you get to it before it eats through the frame.

We remove all rust down to bare metal, treat and seal the surface, and finish with the same Sarco putty and paint system we use on wood windows. The windows come back looking and operating like new, with decades of life ahead of them.

The Steel Restoration Process

How We Bring Steel Windows Back

1

Removal & Assessment

Steel windows (or their operable panels) are removed and brought to our shop, where we assess the extent of rust, any damaged glazing, and the condition of hardware and operators.

2

Strip to Bare Metal

All built-up paint and rust comes off, down to bare metal. Any rust left under a topcoat keeps spreading, so we don't paint over problems.

3

Rust Inhibitor & DTM Primer

We apply a rust inhibitor followed by a Direct-to-Metal (DTM) primer. That two-step protection is what makes the restoration last instead of just looking good for a season.

4

Sarco Glazing

Glass is cleaned or replaced as needed, then glazed with Sarco putty for a weather-tight, flexible seal between glass and steel that resists cracking and keeps water out.

5

Two Coat High Performance Acrylic Finish

Two coats of high performance acrylic paint finish the restoration with a durable, weather-resistant surface.

A Note on Lead Paint

RRP Lead Safety Certified

Homes built before 1978, which covers nearly every mid-century home with steel windows, may contain lead paint. Barron Restorations is fully RRP (Renovation, Repair and Painting) Lead Safety Certified, and we follow all EPA lead-safe work practices to protect your family and our crew.
