Steel Window Restoration

Mid-Century Steel Window Restoration in Austin, TX

Rust removal, rust inhibition, Direct-to-Metal primer, and Sarco glazing — bringing your original steel windows back to like-new condition.

About Steel Window Restoration

Original Steel Windows Are Worth Saving

Mid-century homes were built with steel casement and awning windows that, when properly restored, are incredibly durable and beautiful. The biggest enemy of steel windows is rust — but rust is a surface problem, not a death sentence.

Our steel window restoration process removes all rust down to bare metal, treats and seals the surface, and finishes with the same Sarco putty and premium paint we use on wood windows. The result is windows that look and operate like new, with decades more life ahead.

The Steel Restoration Process

Built to Handle Rust. Built to Last.

1

Removal & Assessment

Steel windows (or their operable panels) are carefully removed and brought to our shop. We assess the extent of rust, any damaged glazing, and the condition of hardware and operators.

2

Strip to Bare Metal

All built-up paint and rust is removed completely — down to bare metal. This is non-negotiable. Any rust left beneath a topcoat will continue spreading. We don't paint over problems.

3

Rust Inhibitor & DTM Primer

We apply a superior rust inhibitor followed by a quality Direct-to-Metal (DTM) primer. This two-step protection system is the key to a restoration that lasts — not just one that looks good temporarily.

4

Sarco Glazing

Glass is cleaned or replaced as needed, then glazed with Sarco putty — creating a weather-tight, flexible seal between the glass and steel frame that resists cracking and water infiltration.

5

Two Coat High Performance Acrylic Finish

Two coats of high performance acrylic paint finish the restoration with a durable, weather-resistant surface that complements your home's exterior perfectly.

A Note on Lead Paint

RRP Lead Safety Certified

Homes built before 1978 — which includes the vast majority of mid-century homes with steel windows — may contain lead paint. Barron Restorations is fully RRP (Renovation, Repair and Painting) Lead Safety Certified. We follow all EPA guidelines for lead-safe work practices, protecting your family and our crew throughout the restoration process.
